Hypodermic Needle

Charles Pravaz, a French surgeon, developed the first practical hypodermic needle which was a metal syringe in 1853 after Irish physician, Francis Rynd, invented the hollow needle in 1844.  From there the hypodermic needle syringe evolved by Alexander Wood, a Scottish physician, from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Doctor Wood had been experimenting and finally developed a hollow pointed hypodermic needle syringe that was fine enough to pierce the skin to inject morphine in the treatment of neuralgia. Pravaz used intravenous injection from his hypodermic needle syringe for the treatment of aneurysm.

In 1850 Doctor Woods was appointed to Scotland’s Administration of Drugs before he created his version of the hypodermic needle syringe.

Doctor Woods eventually published a short paper titled 'A New Method of treating Neuralgia by the direct application of Opiates to the Painful Points' - in "The Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Review" which he showed the hypodermic needle syringe was not necessarily limited to the administration of opiates.

Today RVYMED has the most advanced hypodermic needles at great prices through our online medical supplies store.
